Shinsuke Otani is a professor of
sociology at Kwansei Gakuin University. He has studied widely
in the area of urban sociology and social network studies.
He researches how urbanism affects personal community networks
in Japan. He has edited a widely used textbook about social
research methods. In addition, he has examined many opinion
polls that have been conducted by local governments. In
Toronto he is studying similarities and differences between
the social networks of Japanese and North American society.

Byung-Sun Choe is a professor of
urban planning at Kyungwon University. His teaching and
research focuses on urban and regional planning practice,
land development methods, and policy analysis. He has been
engaged in a variety of research and plan-making activities
such as national territorial planning, metropolitan planning,
new town development, and policy evaluations. He also has
co-authored leading textbooks on spatial planning and development
in Korea. In Toronto he is studying Canada’s planning
and regulation system in comparison with those of USA, England

Ronald Vogel is a professor of political
science and urban and public affairs at the University of
Louisville. His teaching and research focuses on urban politics
and policy, urban economic development, and metropolitan
governance. He is a former Fulbright Scholar to Japan where
he studied local government decentralization and reform
of Tokyo Metropolitan Government. In Toronto he is studying
the reorganization of metropolitan governance. He is the
co-author of a leading text on urban politics in the United
States

I am from the National University
of Mexico, a geographer working on urban issues. In Mexico
I have a research project focused on the urban decline in
the centre of the city. We are researching the changes in
land uses and in real estate values. Also we are researching
the changes between 1971 and 2000, when big malls began
to appear in Mexico City and the city centre ceased to be
the place higher income people shopped. Other topics I am
interested are: retail location, land values and property
tax policy, and housing markets in the context of urban
change. 2001-2002.
